INUNDAR’T FESTIVAL
Open Cube, Girona, Spain 2019

Open Cube was a public installation made for the Inundar’t Live Arts Festival which took place during the last weekend of June in la Rambla of Girona.
Open Cube is a nod toward the Berlin wall; a wall built to separate Berlin in two, which gave home to a channel of communication for thousands of people who made paintings on it in revolt to its purpose, with some parts still standing today.
I wanted to create a positive space for the audience, created live and in collaboration with them. I invited anyone walking by to take a spray can and to paint on the cube, to express their souls with no restrictions on gender, nationality or age. An open wall to be whoever you want to be. Once the canvas was covered, I created a series of portraits painted live on each side of the cube, choosing a variety of relationships and personalities to convey with the words and thoughts bringing them alive.
The idea of placing a “Cube” in the public space was to offer a 360-degree experience where people could interact with all of its sides; seeing what conversations and ideas they found as they explore the work. I also designed Open Cube as a metaphor of the mind. The mind as a cube, accumulating different perceptions and knowledges.
